la sun - 9 man volleyball

A friend asked me to take a stab at designing some jerseys from LA SUN, a nine-man volleyball team that’ll be competing in Montreal this year.

LA SUN - 9 MAN VOLLEYBALL JERSEY CONCEPT PAINTING

Three jerseys, each with a sun in the sky, morning, afternoon, and sunset. The illustration would feature a combination of the visual iconography people associate with Los Angeles, as well as a few nods for locals (the tower above the Hollywood sign, the San Gabriel Mountains). Intended aesthetic is meant to be Chinese painterly/ink brush as a nod to the Chinese-American roots of Nine Man Volleyball.

TBD if they decide to go with this concept, I got some feedback that was interesting, and that I hadn’t considered before, so I’ll probably do another round to address the notes.

(It’s lovely but a lot of color, which is hard to see/can be distracting during a match where 9 people are on a volleyball court… something I don’t think I would have ever considered since I don’t play sports and haven’t made sports consumer products yet.)
